We were in Poipu May 25-31, 2015. Our “best bets”: Kiahuna Plantation in Poipu is a wonderful place to stay, with a fabulous beach (but the signature restaurant is closed till July). Keoki’s Palace, right across the street, has really good food, ambiance and service; worth the rather high price. A relative bargain for foodies is La Spezia wine bar and restaurant in Koloa Old Town; comfy, laid-back, good salads and local seafood. Casa Di Amici also very good if you want to splurge on creative “fusion” cuisine.
Kuilau Ridge Trail in Kapaa is a fairly easy (by Hawaii standards) hike with incredible views. If you only have time for one hike, do this one.
I concur with a reader below who said Allerton Gardens is not worth the pricey admission. Very underwhelming. Same goes for McBride Gardens.

What Readers Have to Say

“My husband and I have made quite a few trips to the islands and the last four were with your book in hand… We wouldn’t leave home without them. They really helped us to enjoy all of Hawaii, not just the high spots. Thank you so much for your insight and expertise on the islands.”
