62-100 Kaunaoa Dr, Kohala

Note: This resort re-opened and rebranded by the Westin in mid-2018 and we will be reviewing it again soon.

Owned by the same company that owns the nearby Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, the Hapuna was built next to one of the best beaches on the island. Their kitty-corner location denies the resort the true beachfront designation the Mauna Kea has, but you can access Hapuna Beach with ease. In past editions we have found the resort clean but stark and cold. Sounds easily echo off the bare cement walls. Though the lobby is sparse, they have added some furnishings. The rooms’ latest facelift made them brighter and more modern, but not outstanding. The bathrooms are large with separate tubs and showers.

We feel Tower 3 is the best, and the first floor is great for families with kids because the rooms open up onto the lawn. But we must need an eye exam because we’ve been in some ocean view rooms and couldn’t see the ocean anywhere in some of the other towers. We were assured that “the ocean is out there.” Gee, that’s comforting. The resort is pretty spread out, so expect to do a lot of walking. They have a mandatory resort fee of $31.25 (includes tax) that includes: self-parking, internet, snorkel gear, a couple of discounts and a few other items. Valet parking is $6 extra. Local calls are a buck. Other items, like the umbrellas by the pool and beach, are free. Many cultural activities are available. You have signing privileges at the Mauna Kea, and they run a free nightly shuttle to the restaurants there.

Rooms (600–880 sq. ft.) are $575–$825. Suites (1,200 sq. ft.) are $1,125.

What Readers Have to Say

“Greetings! I’ve just returned from the Big Island and attribute about 80% of the experiences and knowledge I gained from that trip to your book, “The Big Island Revealed”! It was the best vacation I’ve ever had and it’s partly due to the friendly, serene spirit of the people and places we saw, but also due to your aptly titled Ultimate Guidebook we purchased at the airport. You guys were honest, insightful, and on the right path for a non-tourist-minded tourist exploring the island for the first time. Great job!”
