At this 27-acre former plantation, peace and privacy are yours—the trade-off is relative isolation given the location on the extreme west side. There is much feeling of ‘ohana (family) here, and you will definitely experience the aloha spirit. With their location so close to the mouth of the very reddish Waimea River, swimming in the murky ocean water is pretty poor at this marginal beach. The coconut grove, banyan trees and hammocks scattered about add to the quiet charm of this property, and this is a good place to watch the sunset over the private island of Ni‘ihau.

Many of these cottages were once plantation workers’ homes, and each is as different as their former owner’s tastes. We had a hard time coming up with adjectives to describe the rooms. They have old-style floors and furniture, just like from the plantation days. Units vary tremendously in decor, price and proximity to the ocean. Rooms have been refurbished with modern amenities, but they retain the old-style feel inside, without feeling too old and worn. They are very clean. Most bathrooms have showers only, so if you need a tub, request one when booking. All rooms have a full kitchen.

There’s a mandatory $25 per day resort fee, which covers local and long distance calls, internet, room safes, daily coffee and dvd rentals and many other items you may have thought were included anyway. Prices have come down with the new management making this an easy Solid Gold Value. Studios (300 sq. ft.) are $139–$199, 1/1s (approx. 594 sq. ft.) are $195–$429, 2/1s (approx. 726 sq. ft.) are $239–$465, 3/2s (approx. 1,088 sq. ft.) are $279–$499, 4/3s (approx. 1,250 sq. ft.) are $399–$599, 5/4s (4,020–4,240 sq. ft.) are $659–$839. Discounts available.

What Readers Have to Say

“My brother and I went to Maui… We had 3 copies: the iPhone version on iPad and iPhone, plus one on the kindle, which went with us in the car in a waterproof bag. What can I say? Without your guide, our holiday would not have been even half as good… After many lovely scenic stops… went straight to the falls at the Akelele bridge. This was the most magic moment of the whole week: just the two of us there, the wonderful 50-ft falls: idyllic and worth the cost of the guidebook alone. Your irreverence kept us amused, your knowledge kept us informed, and without your constant companionship, we would either never have had the confidence to do the things we did, or would simply have never known they were there to do in the first place. Thanks so much for making our trip.”
