658 Wharf St, Lahaina

This is the oldest hotel on the island. Built in 1901, it’s right in the heart of downtown Lahaina. (That’s good for convenience, bad if you’re looking for peace and quiet at night.)  It’s clean and well-tended. Lanais in all rooms, but they’re not private, so behave yourself. You’ll have to park on Wainee and Dickenson and hoof it to your room, but parking is free. Once ensconced in your room, there is no better place to stay to feel the heartbeat of Lahaina.

They’re rarely full except in peak seasons, so you can almost always get a room. Courtyard rooms are the quietest. Note that no rooms directly face the ocean. The original building of the hotel faces the ocean, but those rooms need updating, and county permits (for historical buildings) are a bit tricky—so for now, they sit empty. We like the banyan tree-facing rooms. You get a 15 percent discount at their restaurant. Rooms (227 sq. ft.) are $187–$268, corner king rooms (454 sq. ft.) are $207–$268.

What Readers Have to Say

“Thank you so much for writing such amazing guidebooks. I picked up my first book of yours — the Big Island Revealed — in 2003 and have been hooked on them ever since. My family and I have at least one book of yours for each of the four main islands. Even though we are from Chicago, we have been to the Hawaiian islands six times since 2003, and each time we go, we buy the most recent version of your books. Your books have made our trips memorable and we don’t know what we would do without them. A large part of why we keep coming back to the islands is because we want to do more things suggested in your books.”
