15200 Haleakala Hwy, Kula

Located up Haleakala at the 3,200 foot level, this inn is the place to stay if you’re hankering to be close to Haleakala Crater, you want to stay where it’s cool, or you just want to get away from it all. No phones (they have a courtesy phone in the restaurant), no TV and maybe no cellphone reception, but there are some expansive views. Rooms have electric heaters shaped like tiny wood stoves since winter temps dip into the low 60s (summer gets into the upper 60s, and a couple of rooms have ceiling fans). Hey, that might not be chilly where you come from, but it’s considered the Arctic to Maui residents. It’s definitely cool-a in Kula. Some renovations had been completed to rooms and baths since our last visit, but the rooms still look like they could use more… a lot more. No laundry facilities on site. Housekeeping service is free upon request. Rooms feel a bit overpriced at $180–$280.

What Readers Have to Say

“I love your book on the Big Island and I recommend it to everyone who gives even a hint of interest in traveling to Hawaii. First I say, “You MUST visit the Big Island and the Big Island is Hawaii, not Oahu!” and then I say, “You MUST get this book!”…Thanks for taking the time to write an excellent guide book!
