75-5646 Palani Rd, Kailua-Kona

This hotel is located across the street from Kailua Bay in the heart of Kailua-Kona. The buildings, built over time several decades ago, are immaculate but very dated. Tidiness is a welcome obsession here. The simple grounds are constantly groomed; the rooms are acceptable, but the mattresses leave something to be desired. Also, sounds do carry between rooms, especially the plumbing sounds. (The showerheads are perfectly mounted—if you are 5-foot-2 inches tall.) You won’t find waterslides, glass elevators or an atrium the size of Kaua‘i, but you will find a pleasant hotel with a central location and fairly reasonable rates staffed by friendly folks. If that’s what you are looking for—stop looking. Parking is $7. Standard rooms in the oldest building are $110–$150. Superior rooms are $145–$150, deluxe rooms are $155–$160. Prices include breakfast for Superior and Deluxe rooms (simple choices) at a nearby restaurant. Tower rooms with an even number on the high floors have distant ocean views. If you consider that few pay the rack rate, it might be a Solid Gold Value.

What Readers Have to Say

“Last year a colleague lent me your guidebook. I literally had no need of a local guide. I used your book to find all of the best, secluded beaches. I hiked wonderful ridges and trails that only a local from that neighborhood or someone who had your directions could find. Needless to say, once I found out a couple of months ago that I was returning, the first thing I did was to buy your book. I’ve already highlighted the pages for hikes and beaches I want to revisit or discover for the first time.”
