Built in 1942, this inn is part of a larger collection of properties that have been through lots of changes over the years, sometimes good and sometimes not so good. For this edition Chalet Kilauea rebranded as Kilauea Hospitality Group and were in the midst of renovating rooms on our visit. The Deluxe Bungalow is two-story; a wooden spiral staircase leads to the bedroom with its dreamy view and is the most private. Most rooms were undergoing renovations with extra attention on the bedding and bathrooms. The grounds are lush with a large koi pond. Low ceilings in the main house make rooms feel smaller, but helps keep them warmer on cold nights (which happens at this altitude). All rooms have TVs, some rooms have led fireplace “artwork,” which feels a bit out of place—just for mood, really. Rooms (275–500 sq. ft.) are $169–$229. Room decor varies a lot.

They also have other properties off-site. Volcano Hale has six small, simple rooms with tvs, free Wi-Fi and computers, shared remodeled baths, shared kitchen and living area, and housekeeping service every third day for $65–$75 (a very good deal for those on a budget). The five-room Lokahi Lodge is also a good deal at $125–$145 and has larger rooms (most were updated, so ask for one) with baths, microwave, fridge, hot tub, free Wi-Fi and computers in common area, housekeeping every third day. All renters may enjoy facilities at the Chalet, like the afternoon tea and breakfast. These two off-site properties earn them a Solid Gold Value for this edition.

What Readers Have to Say

“When we decided to take a Hawaiian vacation, I went out and bought a bunch of guidebooks. One of them was Maui Revealed, because it looked different and when I paged through, it sounded like someone was having fun writing it. I went back and bought Oahu Revealed, too, for our short stay there. They are the only books we bothered taking with us on the trip. I spent hours pouring over the book and the website. I felt at home with Maui before ever leaving for the airport!.. This was the best vacation ever!”
