Hard to believe that the owners only paid $53,000 for this prime oceanfront location back in 1947. Owned by a military family who raised their children here over the years, this 1.5-acre gated property still has a relaxing family feel. The grounds are very tropical with hammocks and picnic tables scattered about.

The six buildings (many moved from the old Haleiwa Hotel) have changed and been updated with the last one added in 2010. One of the best spots to watch North Shore surfing in the winter is from their large beachfront patio with BBQs for guests to use. All the units have a similar decor—a little bamboo here, a Hawaiian print there and a full kitchen, but no telephones. They do a lot of small weddings here and have many repeat visitors. In fact, they book up to a year and half in advance, but you may find an opening here and there if you didn’t plan ahead. There is no A/C in most units (only in some garden view bedrooms), but you really don’t need it here. Just open up the doors/windows and let the breezes flow through. Even though this is run like a hotel, there is a cleaning fee for each unit.

To be right on the beach for this price and have such privacy makes this a Solid Gold Value. Studios (350 sq. ft.) are $170, 1/1s (400–600 sq. ft.) are $155–$200, 2/1s (500–750 sq. ft.) are $170–$245. 3-night minimum. Discounts on longer stays.

What Readers Have to Say

“Just wanted to let you know that I spent 11 days in Maui in January and it was the most wonderful vacation ever – thanks in large part to your “Maui Revealed.” I was able to find hikes, beaches, lodging, restaurants, and make good decisions about various sights and vendors. Your warning about the one-lane section of the west Maui road past the olivine pools gave us the courage to do it and the wisdom to do it safely.”
