420 Papaloa Rd.

Thanks to a new owner, the Kaua‘i Shores has finally emerged as a trendy boutique hotel after years of neglect. A nice oceanfront location next to the Coconut Marketplace, though you don’t really get a feel for the ocean here the way the buildings are oriented. Room renovations are bright and modern with shades of green and orange. Their pools aren’t much to speak of, and there is a fire pit on property. Their beachside restaurant, Lava Lava Beach Club, has tables literally in the sand (see our review in Island Dining). There is a mandatory resort fee of $18, which includes self-parking, local calls, Wi-Fi access, room safe, daily coffee pods, yoga classes, dvd and PS3 rentals, a welcome mai tai, weekly manager’s reception and a few other items. Rooms (313 sq. ft.) are $239–$299 for studios, $349 for 384-sq.-ft. studios with kitchenettes. Discounts available.

What Readers Have to Say

“Our family just returned from 11 days on the Big Island during which I used your book extensively. I had found your guides to be an excellent reference source on a previous trip, and bought the updated version for this one. Like before, I really appreciated the sound advice on activities as well as places to stay and eat…we had a truly memorable trip that we will talk about for years to come…Thank you for doing such a superior job of reviewing and explaining all the facets of the Big Island. I don’t know when I’ll be going again, but I do know I’ll be buying another copy of your book when I do.”
