150 Kilauea Ave, Hilo

You’re walking into someone’s home at this small inn. The proprietors live on-site, and you can see that attention and care in the four rooms, all named after different birds photographed on the walls. There’s a little outdoor area between all the doorways with some Hawai‘i necessities like sunscreen, water and, most importantly, our book.

There’s no view here, but it’s the perfect location to easily wander through downtown Hilo. You’re getting a location of convenience—supermarket across the street, restaurants within a few minutes, and a chocolate shop next door that offers the most addictive drinks we’ve ever encountered. Not only is the location perfect for walking to restaurants, shops and events, the owners are also a treasure trove of information on the surrounding neighborhoods.

The rooms are clean, simple and have a Hawaiiana flavor. The welcoming basket of local, Ka‘u coffee is a nice touch. However, there are some downsides here: the cleaning fee ($25), no parking on-site (you’ve gotta find street parking), no a/c, no phones, no TVs and the potential for road noise. Some additions, like a small cot or microwave are available for rent. Studio (238 sq. ft.) is $90 (based on single person), deluxe rooms (295 sq. ft.) and suites (308 sq. ft.) are $105–$115 (based on two people). Additional people are $20.

What Readers Have to Say

“I just wanted to say thanks for making a GREAT series of books. You have given us so many ideas as to where to stay and what to do. Plus your books make for some great reading. I rather enjoy the style that you wrote in. Your books are not stuffy like a lot of other books we’ve read on Hawaii. I can not tell you how many times I busted out laughing about how bad a place is to eat or stay. I’m very much looking forward to staying in Hawaii and thanks again for the most helpful series of books.”
