This Four Seasons opened its doors in 2016 after a $250 million renovation to the former JW Marriott Ihilani Resort. Although the entry and footprint don’t feel much different to us than the former hotel, many amenities have been added to bring it up to Four Seasons’ standards.

They have added an adult pool and spa/hot tub and a keiki pool that is partly sand-lined, as well as a keiki spa/hot tub. Their fitness/tennis/spa center occupies the same building as before with a tennis pro on site, basketball court, separate cardio and weight rooms (with personal trainer), full service spa (with its own lap pool and spa/hot tub) and children’s center. The children’s program called “Kids For All Seasons” is free for guests, and they even have a room for parents and babies, as well as an adult game room for those who can’t give up their Playstation time. This extensive program takes kids ages 5–12 outside for crab hunts and other water activities, as well as helping them create crafts and keepsakes to take home.

Their Naupaka Spa has every service you can imagine—from Hawaiian healing therapies to massages to facials to hair styling, including a barber shop—and even a wedding salon for the bride and her party. They built a small chapel on site that hold up to 40 guests. The Four Seasons is one of the few resorts that doesn’t charge a resort fee and offers a few complimentary activities like SUP, sunrise yoga and outrigger canoe rides. You can pick a cabana package by the pools or beach for $495 and up to $1,595, which includes lunch and dinner for two, champagne, fresh fruit, a selfie stick—to prove you were there—Wi-Fi, a TV, fridge, Dr. Dre headset, unlimited sunscreen, concierge service, and other extras for extra like a mani/pedi… you get the idea. Private dinners can be arranged on their Pohaku Point (and other spots) starting at $1,000 per couple plus tax and gratuity.

The rooms are perfect here, large and well-laid out with tons of closet space. The bathrooms have separate showers, deep soaking tubs and double vanity sinks. Every room has a spacious lanai and a ceiling fan, so feel free to open up the doors and let in the ocean breezes. The decor has a warm, natural feel to it. Beds can be customized with mattress toppers. Large 65-inch smart TVs and iPads are available in each room and to use around the resort. They come in handy for ordering room service or streaming Netflix. You can enjoy Nespresso coffee daily in your room and have your empty fridge turned into your own personal mini bar with items of your choosing. Some of the suites even come with their own outdoor spas and gardens.

All of this sits on a lovely, protected Ko Olina lagoon shared with Disney’s Aulani resort. A property like this could feel stuffy and pretentious, but the Four Seasons is a warm, welcoming addition to O‘ahu. Overall, it’s the kind of place you don’t want to leave—until you see your bill.

Rooms (640 sq. ft.) are $525–$875, suites (1,000–4,070 sq. ft.) are $1,295–$17,000. Packages can take the sting off those rack rates.

What Readers Have to Say

“My wife and I just completed a 10-day trip of The Big Island. Our third trip to Hawaii and our second time on Hawai’i, but our first with one of your guides. That book has to have been one of the best travel investments we’ve made! Thanks for making our trip an exciting voyage of discovery yet letting us do that in an efficient manner by telling us just what to see and what we could afford to skip. The accurate, descriptive, candid, and sometimes funny guide was our greatest resource and constant companion throughout the trip. Our copy returned home dog-eared, bent, folded, rained-on and dried-out, and looking exactly as a companion on such an adventure should! The book alone could tell our friends and families tons of stories about our trip. My wife mentioned that it was so decsriptive it would almost be interesting to read even if you weren’t traveling. But of course, after reading it, who could resist the urge to go?”
