UPDATE: This resort re-opened in 2017 but we have yet to revisit it for an updated review. Hope to soon.

This resort is actually on harder-to-pronounce Hulopo‘e Bay, has a more Hawaiian feel than sister property “the Lodge” does. At check-in, your credit card is momentarily whisked away to be run through their special NASA-designed hydraulic credit card press, capable of pumping more money out of your credit card than you ever imagined. The resort is very pretty and tropical and the restaurants are good, though pricey. The atmosphere is “relaxed elegance.” This resort doesn’t feel stuffy or pretentious. The Asian art exhibited is from the owner’s private collection, and some of the art is outstanding.

Though not directly on a beach, it is a short walk from their property on their beach path. The pool and its 2 spas are open 24 hours, and during the day you can enjoy an Evian spritz, chilled towels and even get your sunglasses cleaned.

Many amenities at this property are included in your room rate, such as room safes, valet parking, fitness classes, snorkel gear, and personalized mini bar selections. Local calls are a buck.

It is clear that families are welcome here. They have a free kids’ program during the day and a teen center with video games, pool table and large HDTV. They will child-proof your room and leave out a welcome snack of milk and cookies on arrival. Cribs are free along with some other gear for your keiki. Adults will be happy here, too, with romantic dinners for two (or up to 6 people) in the ocean hale on the lawn where they also do couple’s spa treatments.

There is a shuttle ($48 per person per stay) that will bring you back and forth around town or to the Lodge to enjoy what they have to offer up there. Rooms (576–814 sq. ft.) are $395–$995, suites (900–2,700 sq., ft.) are $1,050–$6,500.

What Readers Have to Say

“I just wanted to say thanks for making a GREAT series of books. You have given us so many ideas as to where to stay and what to do. Plus your books make for some great reading. I rather enjoy the style that you wrote in. Your books are not stuffy like a lot of other books we’ve read on Hawaii. I can not tell you how many times I busted out laughing about how bad a place is to eat or stay is…thanks again for the most helpful series of books.”
