98 Apapane Rd, Hilo

Located just off Kalanianaole Avenue in east Hilo past the industrial area, this hostel is popular with backpackers. They offer several tours in their vans, since, as they put it, “Most of our guests don’t have cars.” They have a room with 55-inch smart TV (feel free to login to your streaming account) and a large outdoor patio. Although you might not get Four Seasons pampering, the staff here seems laid back and fun (on a particularly rainy day, they helped guests build a slip-and-slide in the yard area…why weren’t we invited?).

The lodge/hostel is a scattering of buildings. Dorms are small and can get hot (especially interior-facing dorms). On this visit the rooms felt fresh, but many units still feel closed in. They say they clean the carpets fairly often, and in rainy Hilo that must be a full-time job. Bike rentals are $10 per day. Lockers for storage of bulky items, like backpacks are $2/day. Deluxe Private rooms (private bath and shared kitchen) for $109, semi-private (private bedroom, shared bath and kitchen) for $80, dorms for $39 up to $69 (per same-sex couple), or you can pitch your tent for $18 per person (no children under 4). They also offer some suites with kitchens from one to three bedrooms for $110–$220. Deluxe rooms and top floor suite bedrooms (only) have a/c. 7-night maximum stay. Proof of an outward bound air ticket/itinerary is needed upon check in.

What Readers Have to Say

“I just returned from a 2 week trip to Hawaii. I bought several books and became obsessed with planning the trip 5 months in advance. Then I discovered your books. I bought the ones on Kauai and the Big Island. Your insight and photos were incredible. As a geography major, I really appreciated the aerials and the cartography. I changed a few things after reading yours – added the Big Island to an already crowed itinerary that included Oahu and Kauai, but don’t regret one minute of it.”
