98 Apapane Rd, Hilo

Located just off Kalanianaole Avenue in east Hilo past the industrial area, this place is popular with backpackers. They offer several tours in their vans, since, as they put it, “Most of our guests don’t have cars.” They have a room with 55-inch tv and tons of movies to choose from and a large outdoor patio. The lodge/hostel is a scattering of buildings. Dorms are small and can get hot (especially interior-facing dorms). On this visit the rooms felt fresh, but many units still feel closed in. They say they clean the carpets fairly often, and in rainy Hilo that must be a full-time job. Bike rentals are $10 per day. Lockers for storage of bulky items, like backpacks are $2/day. Smaller items, like passports, they will store in their safe for free. Deluxe Private rooms (private bath and shared kitchen) for $75, semi-private (private bedroom, shared bath and kitchen) for $65, dorms for $28 up to $55 (for a lockable room per same-sex couple), or you can pitch your tent for $14 per person (no children under 4). They also offer some suites with kitchens from one to three bedrooms for $99–$180. 7-night maximum stay. Proof of an outward bound air ticket/itinerary is needed upon check in.

“My boyfriend and I used your books to explore secluded places on Kauai and the Big Island and enjoyed ourselves immensely. We relied on your knowledge of activities and restaurants and had the best time of our lives…Thank you both for your love of the islands of Hawaii and for sharing that with us. It has made our experiences there memorable.”
