Located adjacent to Lydgate Park (the safest place to swim on the island—it also has a playground), this resort is great for families with small children. In 2016 this 1968 property, after going through many changes, was finally reborn as the Hilton Garden Inn. The renovations are remarkable in the interior areas and rooms. The rooms are modern with touches of purple (the color of Kaua‘i) and soft greens. Only two category of rooms have a lanai (besides cottages)—the Ocean View Lanai rooms and the 1-bedroom suite. No rooms have an in-room safe. You will have to use the front desk safety deposit boxes.  Rooms in Pikake Wing are larger (402 sq. ft.) than the Maile Wing (363 sq. ft.). Some rooms have bathtubs. The cottages are 685 sq. ft. These are a good value for families since they are very close to the Kamalani Playground and have adjoining room options. The pools are small and not remarkable here, but they have been redone and are often quiet because of their size. They have added a cultural sunrise visit to the heiau near the beach (three days a week) and nightly entertainment in the lobby.

They used to get a Solid Gold Value rating, but the new renovations brought the prices more in line with the area. They charge a mandatory $22 resort fee, which includes local calls, two mai tais (or soft drinks) daily, coffee daily, bicycles (two people/2 hours per stay), safe deposit boxes, internet and a few other items. Rates are $289–$319 for rooms, suites (450–625 sq. ft.) are $329–$409. 1/1 (685 sq. ft.) cottages are $399.

What Readers Have to Say

“I Googled ‘best guidebook for Kauai’ and this one came up. I ordered it off Amazon and I’m a quarter way through reading it, dog-earing and highlighting things I think we’d want to see/do (which is pretty much every single page). I’ll be reading in bed and my husband will ask what I’m laughing at…it’s the book! It’s hilarious! Kind of funny I’m laughing more reading a guidebook than I do at a comedy tv show. It’s also incredibly informative and it’s already been invaluable. Just wanted to say thanks, Mr. Doughty, for writing this and sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. It’s been a lot of fun already. We can’t wait to go! ”
