A 16-story tower right on the beach. The location is fantastic, though the building design means only a small percentage of rooms are right over the beach. They’re near the center of action in Waikiki, and their restaurants—especially Duke’s Canoe Club—are winners. The last renovation included soundproofing to the walls between rooms. (Wish other resorts would think of this.) In previous editions this resort was a Real Gem, and it’s unprecedented that we like a place less after a renovation, but there’s always a first time. The color scheme feels dated and dark. And other aspects seem out of place in modern Waikiki. We’re afraid they missed the mark this time.
On the up side, services are nice here—such as a sit-down check-in—and the staff is very good. The deluxe oceanfront categories have separate showers and double Jacuzzi bathtubs, but square footage is slightly smaller at 330 sq. ft. Connecting rooms are available. Some of the “ocean view” rooms get pretty marginal the farther back you go on the Diamond Head side. But overall, this is a resort with a good attitude and a great location. There are lots of beach activities and Hawaiian cultural programs available. Parking is $35 (valet-only). Rooms (330–421 sq. ft.) are $509–$849. Suites (555–685 sq. ft.) are $1,159–$1,439. Lots of packages reduce these prices.

“After battling back and forth, my husband and I finally settled on Hawaii and I thought the hard part was done. Ha! I can’t tell you how overwhelmed I soon became. Maui or Kauai? Wailea or Kaanapali? Condo or hotel? January or June? I felt myself feeling more anxious than excited about what was supposed to be a dream vacation for us. It seems the more I researched, the more confused I became. Happily, I stumbled upon “Maui Revealed” at a local bookstore. I browsed it and found that it was exactly what I was looking for: chock full of information and refreshingly honest. The website, with its aerial shots of the hotels and reviews, was an added bonus. We enjoyed Maui so much that we plan to return. I don’t know whether we’ll end up in Maui or Kaanapali or whether we’ll travel in August or November. But I do know that the latest edition of “Maui Revealed” will be in my overnight bag. Thanks for a great book and happy travels!”
