From the immaculate, garden-like grounds (complete with birds and koi) to the smashing pool area, this place works. The overall feel is calming. They have tons of artwork strewn around the resort. Marriott has an unbelievable circular pool with a bridge to the center island and spas along one edge. What strikes us as most impressive about the Marriott is the service. They obviously take great pains to provide whatever the guest wants. Their last renovation to the rooms modern furnishing and a good use of colors.

They organize many activities, such as scuba diving in their pool, beach massages and private poolside dinners. They have many cultural programs on site and movie nights on Kalapaki Beach.

They are fairly close to the airport, so you will hear some noise, but it’s not bad—probably because the pool area is filled with the white noise of falling water. If you desire one of the poolside casabella chairs, it will cost you $50 per day. Cocoons (covered daybeds) in center of the pool are $70, and a cabana at the beach will run you $80 per day!

They devoted 232 of their rooms to timeshares. The hotel-type rooms are only in the Ha‘upu building or the upper floors of the Kahili building, so if you want to directly face the ocean, you will want the Kahili building. A convenient parking lot sits behind the Ha‘upu building if you are self-parking. There is a mandatory resort fee of $30, which includes in-room internet and self-parking, two mai tais, fitness classes, hula lessons and some other items. Rooms (332–520 sq. ft.) are $399–$718. Suites (1,000–2,114 sq. ft.) are $799–$2,600. Lots of packages available.

What Readers Have to Say

“My husband and I just returned from 12 days in Kauai. We drove the island bottom to top, with the Ultimate Guide as our source of all wisdom, and we are full of praise, both for the island and for the book. You never steered us wrong… We travel a lot, and know all the major guidebooks well. We love the fact that you, unlike the folk at Lonely Planet for example, have real opinions and you are not afraid to share them….and you are usually right. Thank you, and keep on telling travelers why Kauai is so great.”
