Distant views of Hilo Bay from this grand 1899 Victorian home on 5+ acres owned by the Shipman family since 1901. It is fully restored, very well-kept and the generous-sized rooms are furnished mostly with their heirloom pieces. Located across the bridge from mid-town Hilo in the hilly Reed's Island neighborhood, you can pretty much walk to town. The bathrooms, although not very large, are modern but done in a vintage style. Fresh-cut awapuhi (true shampoo ginger) in the showers in the late summer. Nice touch. Any of the many sitting rooms are open for guests’ use, including one with a grand piano. Linen service every couple of days. They make no bones about their very specific rules and quirks, which may make some guests feel unwelcomed. For instance, children 13 and up will be accommodated upon approval only, and you may not roll your luggage through the house. Rooms in main house or a 2/2 separate cottage (374400 sq.ft.) are $219$249. 2-night minimum. |
