Originally built in 1970 (but renovated in 2007), the hotel borders Kahalu‘u Beach on one side and a tide-pool on another. The grounds are nice and include the three reconstructed heiau (temples). Many of the rooms have nice views. The oceanfront rooms are worth every penny. They’re the only rooms on the Big Island directly over the water. Just look down, and you may see turtles and eels swimming in the shallow tide-pool. Other rooms are nice for the money. South facing rooms have silly little square bathtubs, while north facing rooms have showers only and views that may be dominated by the roof of the restaurant in Partial Ocean View rooms that face north. For the location, it’s a great deal. Their Verandah Lounge is a truly kickin’ place to have a sunset cocktail. They offer historic cultural tours on site that delve into the area, Hawaiian traditions and include a meal. Parking is $10 and valet is $15. Local calls are a buck. Rooms (420 sq. ft.) are $269–$439 and connecting rooms are available. Their one-bedroom suite (758 sq. ft.) is $609. All rates include a buffet breakfast for two. Lots of packages available here. Ask for their “Aloha Rate,” which will get room rates starting at $139. That is a Wow! and a Solid Gold Value.
